My brand new Canon A590IS didn't survive a single day without Hardware and Software extensions. Immediately after purchase (it was surprisingly cheap for just €99,95 at Conrad) I loaded chdk (http://chdk.wikia.com) onto the memory card and built my own USB Remote cable from an old pocket lamp.

Unfortunately, the Canon A590IS needs at least 3.7V to fire, a single Lithium-battery was therefor not sufficient. Fortunately, I could remember that I had an old LED-lamp from a promotion lying around that operated on 3 LR44 cells. I simply removed the LED and replaced it by a USB cable based on this schematic from the chdk-wiki: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/USB_Remote_Cable
